Hill’s Hurt. Couches Kill – Food CRISIS

23 06 2012

This week I read about a global food crisis relating to obesity:

The overweight population is a ‘major threat’ to food security, scientists have warned.
The extra pounds carried by fat people could have the same implications for world food energy demands as an extra one billion people, researchers claim.

HEAVIEST 10 NATIONS

  1. U.S.
  2. Kuwait
  3. Croatia
  4. Qatar
  5. Egypt
  6. United Arab Emirates
  7. Trinidad and Tobago
  8. Argentina
  9. Greece
  10. Bahrain

I also have the table for the other end of the scale but unsurprisingly there are not many from the developing world, so its a bit of a red herring to look at.

So why are the Government / Shadow not taking it seriously ? I know from my work in Government and from talking to Doctors etc that its seen as “Oh its OK, we will fix it all with a few operations and or pills ” but we all know, that while that MIGHT help SOME, it will never cure the issue, of course I can sit here and proclaim to know the answer to fix it but that wont help anyone unless the people that CAN make the changes DO .

Let’s see where we go from here eh ?

50 Mph Winds, Rain/flooding & Cold Temps:
Welcome To The British Summer:
This week was a real challenge on the bike with the winds, rain and cold , I only managed 120 miles,
I did manage a few PB’s though , Including this on my short commute,
A few days before this I had managed my first ever over 20mph average at 20.7Mph, this time, I smashed it at 22.2 Mph. Including a hill that hurt (but the couches kill) all on a SINGLE SPEED Bike……It’s amazing to this back to how slow I was when I started !!!!
Cav Speaks:

World champion Mark Cavendish has said that the UK should introduce laws similar to those in the Netherlands and Belgium that place a presumption of liability on motorists involved in a road traffic incident in which a cyclist is killed or injured. Road Safety Minister Mike Penning has responded by saying that such legislation would be “unfair” on responsible drivers.

Cavendish was speaking to The Times, giving his backing to its Cities fit for Cycling campaign, and was asked to give examples of countries where he believed there was a greater culture of safe cycling than in the UK.

& Frankly I TOTALLY Agree, for on Wednesday morning, I was cycling along a main road, a woman on my left was waiting to pull out, she made eye contact with me, stopped, then proceeded to pull out on me, I was only doing about 15 mph as it was a climb, there was JUST enough time for me to swerve  onto the WRONG side of the road to miss being hit by her, she was then right at the side of me on my left and I stuck my hand out  in such a way that she would notice me, she just looked, laughed and continued on her way.

This isnt us vs them form my point of view, I have always said, we need to just get along and show each other respect and 99% of motorists are either good or GREAT but its the 1% that will kill/injure you and its not just amateur drivers either , even the “Professional Drivers” have that 1% too.

London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay:

So, I wasn’t picked and the MAJORITY of people that were have been more deserving than I , however, I just have to have my say and get something off my chest, because YES it would have been one of the proudest moments in my life to be part of BUT,One of the aims of London bidding for the Games was to improve the health of the population by encouraging people to get active and take up sport.Britain already has a serious problem with obesity and according to current projections it is only going to worsen.

So my “Backstory” would have REALLY helped show the masses of the country that are either overweight or obese that things CAN change if you WANT to.

But I wasnt picked and I have accepted that, I have a project ongoing that will do more for me personally than the torch relay would have but that was my chance to give something back to the community / UK

Instead I read about someone who got to carry the Torch because “They galvanized their team to work hard” so as a manager, they did their job and got to carry the torch ? This person was also obese … Then there were 2 company directors who have close links to Coke-a-Cola and Samsung who got to Carry the torch in place of a young up and coming athlete.

& Yet we are told that “They” are treating the obesity crisis SERIOUSLY and that “They” are doing all they can to encourage young athlete’s?

I might sound bitter , IM NOT, but it does take the piss.

Anyway, enough of this, I have more PB’s to beat and KOM to earn.

You will have already read ” Fatcyclist’s take on his wife’s use of ” Strava “? But have you read ” Red Kite Prayer ” on the same subject ?
“Strava ” is a useful tool for those that use it correctly and abide by the ” Rules of Safe Riding “! Doubt that you are a ” chancer ” but there are too many out there that are !
Current blog posts are aimed at getting the IOC & WADA to implement a “Sporting Moratorium ” to get ALL the ” Skeletons out of the Closet ” ! would help to get a clean slate for ALL Coaches/trainers so that Parents will know their offspring are not being forced into ” Corrupt practices ” to achieve success !
